Summary

It's a perfect world, where everything looks right。 But ugly truths lie beneath the surface! It is the future。 There is no war, no hunger, no pain。 No one in The Community wants for anything。 Everyone is provided for。 Each Family Unit is entitled to one female and male child。 Each member of The Community has their profession carefully chosen for them by the Committee of Elders, and they never make a mistake。 Jonas, a sensitive twelve-year-old boy, had never thought there was anything wrong with his Community, until one day。 From the moment Jonas is selected as the Receiver of Memory at The Ceremony, his life is never the same。 Jonas discovers that The Community is not as perfect as it seems。 Although they appear to have everything, they are missing something of great importance。 It is up to Jonas, with the help of the Giver, to find what long ago had been lost。 And so Jonas embarks on an adventure to save the world as he knows it。

Simply and beautifully written, The Giver is sure to touch the heart of every reader。 Lois Lowry deals with issues of everyday life that are so often taken for granted。Through the noble character of Jonas, she presents a glimpse of what could be the future。 As the tension in the novel mounts, so does the number of questions that Lowry confronts the reader with。 The Giver is a book of courage and adventure, and most importantly, one of deep thought。 Once readers make contact with Lowry's treasure, they may never see things exactly quite the same。 Lowry presents a forceful novel that demands to be heard and philosophically dealt with。

Sad, but a once in a lifetime read that everyone should experience。 Jonas’s world is full of what seems to be perfection, but as the new Receiver, he comes to the conclusion that everything is not as great and pure as it seems。 With the memories and the Giver at his side, he watches imperfection and injustice happen right under everyone's nose, and no one even knows what horror they either have committed or witnessed。 The obliviousness and ignorance of his family, friends, and community are now Sad, but a once in a lifetime read that everyone should experience。 Jonas’s world is full of what seems to be perfection, but as the new Receiver, he comes to the conclusion that everything is not as great and pure as it seems。 With the memories and the Giver at his side, he watches imperfection and injustice happen right under everyone's nose, and no one even knows what horror they either have committed or witnessed。 The obliviousness and ignorance of his family, friends, and community are now too much for poor Jonas。 Follow as the pair experience memories of the past and some of their own。 Watch as Jonas grows not only physically but mentally and conscience wise。 Read this fabulous story and experience the unforgettable。 。。。more

I don't know why I enjoyed this book so much, honestly。 “We gained control of many things。 But we had to let go of others。”I've really been slacking on writing reviews for books recently, but I feel that one is necessary。 It's been far too long since I read a traditional dystopian book, and I was not disappointed。 I love that we get to see Jonas discover a lot of the beauties and wonders of our every day life that we overlook, like color, love, and just so many ordinary things and experiences I don't know why I enjoyed this book so much, honestly。 “We gained control of many things。 But we had to let go of others。”I've really been slacking on writing reviews for books recently, but I feel that one is necessary。 It's been far too long since I read a traditional dystopian book, and I was not disappointed。 I love that we get to see Jonas discover a lot of the beauties and wonders of our every day life that we overlook, like color, love, and just so many ordinary things and experiences。 Honestly, I think Lowry was a genius with the whole color thing because I didn't even think twice about how color was never used to describe anything until she revealed that。 I have to say, I am still pretty confused by the ending (view spoiler)[ like, did Jonas die? (hide spoiler)], but I just enjoyed listening to this yesterday and experiencing breaking free of such dullness and "sameness" by the end of it。 Have a wonderful 4th of July 🎉。 。。。more

“The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain。 It's the loneliness of it。 Memories need to be shared。” I had no idea when I picked up this book。 It has been on my TBR list for quite some time, but I didn't even read the blurb。 I picked it up, listened to the audiobook, and completed it while folding the laundry and cleaning the closet。 Liked it and might watch the movie。 “The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain。 It's the loneliness of it。 Memories need to be shared。” I had no idea when I picked up this book。 It has been on my TBR list for quite some time, but I didn't even read the blurb。 I picked it up, listened to the audiobook, and completed it while folding the laundry and cleaning the closet。 Liked it and might watch the movie。 。。。more

“Our people made that choice, the choice to go to Sameness… We gained control of many things。 But we had to let go of others。” Variety is the spice of life。 Not in Jonas’ world, though。 “I was just thinking: what if we could hold up things that were bright red, or bright yellow, and he could choose? Instead of the Sameness。” “He might make wrong choices。” “Oh。” Jonas was silent for a minute。 “Oh, I see what you mean。 It wouldn’t matter for a newchild’s toy。 But later it does matter, doesn’t it? “Our people made that choice, the choice to go to Sameness… We gained control of many things。 But we had to let go of others。” Variety is the spice of life。 Not in Jonas’ world, though。 “I was just thinking: what if we could hold up things that were bright red, or bright yellow, and he could choose? We don’t dare to let people make choices of their own。”In this world, there’s a rule for everything—what to say, what to do, what to wear。 Life is safe and comfortable in its colorlessness。 Safe and comfortable, but not joyful。 Not full of love。 Not exciting。 In other words, life has no depth。 But then Jonas is selected to be the next Receiver of Memory, and he begins to learn that there’s more to life than constant apologies and muted emotions。 The Giver is very slow, nothing truly exciting happens until over halfway through。 But, despite that, this book isn’t unbearably boring。 Maybe it’s not the most exciting book ever, but it keeps your attention。 It causes you to think about why a fulfilling life is full of risks—the risks of laughter and love, of responsibility and sacrifice。 Each of those things can be flipped, can be used to harm you。 But, without those things, you get a world that says this about love。 “Your father means that you used a very generalized word, so meaningless that it’s become almost obsolete,” his mother explained carefully… You could ask, ‘Do you enjoy me?’ The answer is ‘Yes,’” his mother said。 “Or,” his father suggested, “‘Do you take pride in my accomplishments?’ And the answer is wholeheartedly ‘Yes。’” “Do you understand why it’s inappropriate to use a word like ‘love’?” Mother asked。 。。。more

~4。1~This book was not bad。 I honestly had no idea what I was getting into when I first started。 But it is the Hutchings Book Club book for July AND it was only 5 hours on audio。 And listening to that on 2x speed, only like 2。5 hours。 So, I read it。 I LOVE reading dystopians and reading about the world that the author has created and that is what happened here。 Lois Lowry did a good job in creating a world that I never want to live in。 I did really enjoy traveling with Jonas through his life and ~4。1~This book was not bad。 I honestly had no idea what I was getting into when I first started。 But it is the Hutchings Book Club book for July AND it was only 5 hours on audio。 And listening to that on 2x speed, only like 2。5 hours。 So, I read it。 I LOVE reading dystopians and reading about the world that the author has created and that is what happened here。 Lois Lowry did a good job in creating a world that I never want to live in。 I did really enjoy traveling with Jonas through his life and learning more about the "old world" with him and seeing all the changes that his community had made。 But I have to agree with Lizzie when she said that she was really confused with the ending。 I do feel like the ending came up REALLY fast and it was kind of like it happened all in one breath, but that was probably one of the only flaws。 HAVE ANOTHER WONDERFUL FOURTH OF JULY 。。。more

I had to read it。 It's one of the most heard classic scifi。 Also the most praised one。 So I started it。 It made me think a lot of things, but it's not one that I enjoyed much。 It centers on twelve-year-old Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment。 Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community。 This movie tie-in edition features cover art from th I had to read it。 It's one of the most heard classic scifi。 Also the most praised one。 So I started it。 It made me think a lot of things, but it's not one that I enjoyed much。 It centers on twelve-year-old Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment。 Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community。 This movie tie-in edition features cover art from the movie and exclusive Q&A with members of the cast, including Taylor Swift, Brenton Thwaites and Cameron Monaghan。 。。。more

This book disturbed me deeply。 It has the magnetism, simplicity of the story, and the feeling that something is not right from the very beginning。 Narrative is emotionless, which adds to the tension。 The ending did not blow me away though。
